Present-day Eight-Pillar Lanting Pavilion in Zhongshan Park
|
Lanting was once a three-bay pavilion with
a double-eaved roof, fashioned after the ancient Orchid Pavilion
in Shaoxing, zhejiang Province. Set up early in Emperor Yongzheng's
reign,it was commonly known as Liubei (Floating Cups)Pavilion. The
inscription,"Rocks by a Winding Streaem,"on the horizontalboard,was
written by Emperor Qianlong. The Pavilion was reconstructed
into an octagonal pavilion in 1779(44th year of Emperor Qianlong's
reign),supported with eight stone pillars,Each pillar was
inscribed with the famous"Preface to Lanting"done in different
calligraphic styles, known as the famous"eight-pillar calligraphy
of Lanting."The pavillion was destroyed in 1860 and the eight
pillars are kept now in the Zhongshan Park in Beijing. |
